TREVOR PENNING, PhD, FOUNDER
Dr. Penning is
the Thelma Brown and Henry Charles Molinoff Professor of Pharmacology,
Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics and OB/GYN, and Director of the Center
of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (CEET) at the University of
Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.
He is
internationally recognized for his research on steroid hormone transforming
enzymes and was the first to show the importance of human aldo-keto reductases
in the local formation of steroid hormones in target tissues. Dr. Penning has
published over 225 peer-reviewed articles, lectured nationally and
internationally and trained numerous successful young physicians and
scientists. He is a member of The Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society
(ACS), a Chair of the Division of Chemical Toxicology, ACS and a recipient of
Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) grant support including a PFC Challenge Award.
In addition to his dedication to research and academic training, Dr. Penning has been engaged as consultant to academia (Columbia University, University of North Carolina, Rutgers Univesity and others), industry (Avid Therapeutics, Glaxo-Smith Kline, Kythera, Organon, Schering-Plough and others) and to the World Health Organization and the National Center for Toxicological Research. He holds 6 US patents and has 2 patent applications pending. Dr. Penning obtained his PhD in Biochemistry with Professor M. Akhtar F.R.S. at Southampton University, UK and conducted postdoctoral training with Professor Paul Talalay, member of the National Academy of Sciences, at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD. |

As a division of the Penn Center for Innovation at the University of Pennsylvania, UPstart represents a virtual incubator with hands-on support to companies generated from research at the University of Pennsylvania and offers a wide array of services to assist entrepreneurial faculty members in the company formation and development process. Since 2010, UPstart has worked with nearly 100 faculty and staff members to form and launch new companies based on inventions in the life sciences, materials and information technologies space.
